iPhone help for seniors: 10 settings that make it easier to use

An iPhone can be much friendlier with a few changes. None of these need an app or any cost. Each one takes under a minute.

Make it easier to see

  • Bigger text: Settings → Display & Brightness → Text Size. Drag the slider right. Turn on Bold Text on the same screen.
  • Bigger icons: Settings → Display & Brightness → Display Zoom → Larger Text.
  • Magnifier: Settings → Accessibility → Magnifier. Turns the camera into a magnifying glass for menus and pill bottles.

Make it easier to hear

  • Louder ringer: Settings → Sounds & Haptics. Drag Ringtone and Alert Volume up and pick a distinct ringtone.
  • Flash for alerts: Settings → Accessibility → Audio & Visual → LED Flash for Alerts, so the light blinks when someone calls.
  • Live Captions: Settings → Accessibility → Live Captions shows words on screen during FaceTime calls (on supported models).

Cut down on spam and confusion

  • Silence unknown callers: Settings → Phone → Silence Unknown Callers. Calls from numbers not in Contacts go straight to voicemail.
  • Set up Emergency SOS and Medical ID: open the Health app → your picture → Medical ID. First responders can see it from the lock screen.
  • Turn on automatic updates: Settings → General → Software Update → Automatic Updates.
  • Assistive Access: for anyone who finds the iPhone overwhelming, Settings → Accessibility → Assistive Access offers a simplified home screen with big buttons for just Calls, Messages, Camera and Photos.

Menu names change with updates. If a step doesn't match your phone, that's normal. Call or chat with us and we'll find it together.
