Streaming TV made simple: a plain-English guide for seniors

Streaming can save money and put thousands of shows at your fingertips, but the menus and remotes can be confusing. Here's what you need to know, and the quick fixes for the most common problems.

What "streaming" actually means

Instead of cable channels, streaming plays shows over your home internet. You need three things: an internet connection, a TV that can stream (a "smart TV") or a small streaming device plugged into it, and the services you want to watch, such as Netflix, YouTube, or your local channels.

Roku, Fire Stick, Apple TV: which is which?

  • Roku is known for a simple home screen and a basic remote. A good choice if you want things easy.
  • Amazon Fire TV Stick works well if you already use Amazon Prime.
  • Apple TV fits nicely if your family uses iPhones and shares photos.
  • Smart TVs have streaming built in, so you may not need a separate device at all.

Quick fixes for common problems

  • "No signal" or a blank screen: press Input or Source on the TV remote and pick the HDMI port your streaming device is plugged into.
  • Frozen or buffering picture: unplug the streaming device and your internet router for 30 seconds, then plug them back in, router first.
  • Remote not working: replace the batteries, then make sure nothing is blocking the front of the TV or device.
  • Can't hear the dialogue: look for "Speech enhancement," "Dialogue boost," or "Clear voice" in the TV's sound settings.
  • Turn on captions: most apps show a speech-bubble or "CC" button when you press OK or the down arrow while a show is playing.

Can streaming lower my cable bill?

Often, yes. Many people keep internet, drop the cable TV package, and pick one or two services they actually watch. A digital antenna can pick up free local channels in many areas. It's worth listing what you watch before cancelling anything, so you don't lose a favorite channel.

Quick answers

Why does my TV say no signal?

Usually the TV is on the wrong input. Press Input or Source on the TV remote and choose the HDMI port your cable box or streaming device is plugged into.

How do I turn on captions when streaming?

While a show is playing, press OK or the down arrow on your remote and look for a speech-bubble or CC icon to switch captions on.
