For familiesTech help for aging parents: how to stop being the family IT department
If your phone lights up every few days with 'the TV is broken again,' you're not alone. Here's how to set your parents up for fewer problems, and what to do when you can't be the one on call.
Why the calls keep coming
Most of the trouble isn't one big problem. It's a steady drip: a software update that moved a button, a forgotten password, a remote set to the wrong input. Each fix takes five minutes in person and forty-five over the phone, especially when you can't see the screen.
Five setup changes that prevent most calls
- Make text bigger and bolder. On iPhone: Settings → Display & Brightness → Text Size. On Android: Settings → Display → Font size. Half of "I can't find it" is "I can't read it."
- Trim the home screen. Move rarely used apps off the first page so the five they actually use are easy to find.
- Turn on automatic updates so security fixes happen quietly instead of becoming a pop-up they're scared to tap.
- Set up a password manager or a written password book kept somewhere safe at home. Locked-out accounts are one of the most common calls.
- Label the remote. A piece of tape over the buttons they never need and a sticky note on "Input" saves a lot of grief.
Talk about scams before they happen
Older adults are frequent targets of fake tech-support calls and pop-ups. Agree on one simple rule together: no real company will call out of the blue and ask you to install something, buy gift cards, or read back a code. Our scam guide is written to be shared with parents directly.
When you can't be the one on call
Work, kids, and distance make it hard to drop everything. A tech support subscription gives your parent someone patient to call any day of the week, and it gives you your evenings back. With Nexara, you can sign up and pay, and your parent calls or chats with us directly. Many families give it as a birthday or holiday gift.
